Ahh, last minute costume creation...
I am always the last to buy/create a costume in my family, and usually its the latter as opposed to the former. But I have to tell you, you can create any kind of costume with one simple tool-- a wig. For example, this year we had pretty much blown our Samhain budget on costumes for our kids, all four of them, and food for the dumb supper. There wasn't money left for a costume for me, so I decided to just come up with something, as I tend to do every year. My wonderful fiancée was in Walmart buying last-minute groceries and found a long, curly, black wig. He bought it and brought it home for me. Here are the costume ideas I have come up with for this wig--
Bella Swan: Yes, I know she actually has brown hair, but in a pinch, black will do. Flannel Shirt...check. Sweatshirt...check. Jeans...check. Sneakers (in the style of Converse)...check. Now all I need is some light makeup and a dazed look on my face.
Obscure D-list celebrity: Black wig is a must, it seems that so many of these ladies go through a "goth" phase and as long as you have a gigantic pair of sunglasses you can pull this off. You would need to add a pair of thigh-high black boots (preferably ones with a tall heel), a too-short skirt, a spaghetti-strap top and a shirt with a loose neck to put over it, and let this hang from your shoulders. I'm wearing a flowing skirt, pulling it up to about mid-thigh-- the kind with a really eccentric black and white print. The tank top needs to show some cleavage so for this I would just pump up your girls with a couple of push up bras (Uncomfortable, but it will do the trick. The idea is to make it look like you have had implants put in.) A peasant blouse with the ties at the collar loosened would add to the look as well. Make sure you can open the collar enough to let one or both shoulders show. And speaking of goth...
Easiest costume ever with a long black wig-- a goth chick: Heavy makeup. Lots and Lots of black alone or combined with purple or red. VERY loose-fitting, flowing clothes, unless you want to go the more Metal-head route, in which case I would recommend a band t-shirt and a pair of old jeans-- the more worn-in, the better. Boots are always acceptable either way, and if they're big, chunky boots, then you're right on target. Spikes, chains, collars, bangle bracelets, big gaudy jewelery, you name it, it goes. The key here is in the makeup, not so much the clothes. Pick any Tim Burton movie since Beetlejuice and there you have your inspiration. Black eyeliner combined with wild colors of shadow or smokey eyes work the best. No need to wear white facepaint. Just use a foundation that's slightly more pale than the color of your skin. Deep burgundy lipstick works great for the lips then accept your cheekbones with a light dusting just underneath of grey eyeshadow.
